This course examines why one becomes addicted to alcohol and other mood-changing drugs. It challenges myths and stereotypes of substance abuse. It makes one look at why a person is addicted to substances but to other things. It highlights the patterns and progressions of addiction. This course uses the textbook:

Addiction and Grace by Gerald May (book and shipping to continental U.S. are included with the price of the course)

2. Mind and Body: The psychological and neurological nature of addiction
3. Spirit and Grace: The theological nature of addiction; qualities of mercy

After completing this course, the learner should:

• have a working definition of addiction
• understand the characteristics of what makes something an addiction
• know the historical development of alcoholism and drug addiction.
• be aware of personal values that facilitate lack of recovery and factors that can contribute to addiction
• gain a basic understanding of the neurological and physiological body functions of addiction
• understand what is needed to overcome an addiction
