This course is to provide learners with basic knowledge about gangs and gang behavior to assist them with dealing with clients and families affected by gangs. This course satisfies .8 CEUs (8 hours) with CCBADC and BBS.

• To nurture learner's ability to think critically about their clients and their families that are affected by gangs.
• To provide learners with a legal definition about what is a gang.
• To help learners to have a paradigm to understand gang behavior.

Course Objectives

1. The definition of a gang has changed over time. From the readings and perhaps your experience with persons involved in gang activity, how would you describe a gang? Are there characteristics, such as those outside the scope of the definition, that actually support and/or disprove the definition of a gang?

2. Why do persons become involved in gang activity? Cite reasons, if you have any from your experiences of working with clients, why persons become involved in gangs.

3. Based on the different strategies used to work with gangs, what strategies do you think are most effective? Why?

4. The focus of strategies for working with gang youth has been, for the most part, on the collective group. What are pros and cons of working with the individual gang member, particularly in therapy or counseling?
