SYLLABUS
Course Description

This course is to provide learners with basic knowledge about homelessness, its effects and the population of homeless people. This course satisfies .8 CEUs (8 hours) with CCBADC and BBS.

Course Goals
  • To nurture learner's ability to think critically about their clients and their families that are affected by homelessness.
  • To provide learners with factual information about homeless people.
  • To help learners to have a paradigm to understand homelessness.

Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, the student should:
  • Understand causes of homelessness.
  • Understand who are the homeless.
  • Understand the the impact of homelessness on individual, the family and society.
  • Understand the practical issues counselors and therapists face in working with a homeless person as a client.
  • Be able to identify some interventions to help homeless persons.
Course Discussion Questions

1. From the readings, your experiences and observations, provide a description of who is the homeless. Include in your response reasons why people are homeless.
The definition of a gang has changed over time.

2. What are some of the characteristics of homeless people? Will these characteristics remain the same or will societal trends shape these characteristics?

3. What are possible ways to reach homeless persons with mental health and/or substance abuse problems?

4. What are some of the latest trends in homelessness? In your opinion, will the problem of homelessness decrease? How could it be decreased?
