Syllabus for Suicide Prevention Course

Suicide is a very serious problem families face today. This course should help one to become more familiar with the signs associated with the illness. Read the Suicide Prevention document and take the quiz after each section. There are 6 topics and each topic and each topic has a quiz of five questions each. The topics are:

1. Suicide Statistics
2. Why Some Choose Suicide
3. Losing a loved one/patient
4. Teen Suicide
5. There is Help Available
6. Counseling Techniques

After completing this course, the learner should:

  • be familiar with the statistical rates of suicide in the United States
  • understand why some people choose suicide and why others don’t
  • know how to cope with losing a loved one
  • know the signs to look for with teen suicide and how to prevent, become familiar with the help that is available and how to help an individual who shows signs of wanting to end his/her life
  • become familiar with counseling techniques related to a suicide diagnosis
